Entry #1. A Look Into Myself

Hello, my name is Aiden Nissen and I am an average 21 year old male. I work a full-time job, have a loving girlfriend, and I attend college. Over the course of this blog, I will be revealing more about myself whether that is through personal stories or through the tone of whatever my text may be about. However, my favorite way of story telling isn't through text or writing at all. A large part of how I express myself is through music, more specifically guitar.

Guitar has always been a large part of my life and has helped me connect with deeper parts of my life. I grew up around my dad who would often bring me to his best friend's house and I would watch him play in his little garage band. One day I had begged him to buy me my own mini guitar after watching him play, and he did it behind my mom's back because he was ecstatic I wanted to play like him. I distinctly remember the day that my dad told me that it would make my grandpa so proud to see me playing. At this age, I knew my passed grandpa's favorite band was The Beatles and so I had set my goal on learning a song by them to impress my dad.

The first song I learned on guitar was "Blackbird" by The Beatles. It took me around two weeks to a month at the time to play perfectly but when I did, I felt overjoyed. I didn't know if the tears were from the pain in my small fingers, the fact that I was able to play, or from the thought of my grandpa. After playing for my dad, it brought him to tears and he was proud. He was so proud that he ended up making me play that for any family friend that came over for the next two years. Was it worth it? Absolutely. Even today, I continue to play songs that remind me of something and that bring a feeling to mind. Playing with feeling is a lot easier than playing against them. These days it is therapeutic for me to play and just unwind to the tune of songs that remind me of easier times and great people.

Though I may not be the best at playing the guitar, it certainly has become a great way to release. It has become something I look forward to everyday and maybe one day can be my career.

  1. I love music and I'm glad you share the same sentiment as me that music has a way of telling stories. I bet it's always an amazing feeling making not only yourself, but your dad happy when you play. What is your favorite song to play, and if it's "Blackbird", what is your second favorite?

  2. Hello Aiden! Playing/learning guitar is an amazing thing. I know because I'm a guitarist myself! I passionately resonate with your post since I also play guitar and playing guitar has taught me valuable life lessons. It also eases my mind, as you said, when playing guitar. Coincidentally, I also express myself with music and guitar, two things I'm extremely passionate about. I'm glad to see that someone else shares that passion/joy like I do!
